Merit Badge Outline For
| Introduction | Your challenge as a summer camp merit badge counselor is to see that the Scouts who attend your session have the best opportunity to learn about fishing. It is important that they have a positive experience. This lesson plan is designed to help you plan a logical, high-quality program. You may have to use a slightly different approach in presenting the material based on your camp resources and facilities. |
| Resources | Be sure to utilize all the resources available to you. State and federal agencies or other organizations can provide you with a variety of materials and support to help you present the Fishing merit badge program. |

| 1 | Greet Scouts | A. | Examine all merit badge cards for the Scoutmaster's signature. Make a roster of the Scouts. |
| Discuss/ Demonstrate | B. | Review requirement 1, covering the parts of several rods and reels. | |
| Discuss | C. | Discuss regulations affecting game fishing where you live (requirement 6). | |
| Review | D. | Review five safety practices while fishing (requirement 4). | |

| 2 | Discuss/ Demonstrate | A. | Demonstrate the use of three types of fishing equipment (requirement 2.) |
| Demonstrate | B. | Demonstrate how to use the knots in requirement 3. | |
| Practice | C. | Practice casting. | |
| Fish | D. | With the time remaining, go fishing. | |

| 3 | Discuss/ Demonstrate | A. | Demonstrate five basic artificial lures and five natural baits and how to fish with them (requirement 5). |
| Fish | B. | Go fishing, using several lures and baits. | |
| Discuss | C. | While fishing, discuss items in requirement 8. | |

| 4 | Fish | A. | Go fishing and work on requirement 7. |
| Note | B. | Inform the Scoutmaster of any Scout who might not complete the badge. | |

| 5 | Review | A. | Wrap up all the requirements. Prepare the merit badge cards for the proper signatures. If any Scout does not complete all the requirements, make sure that his records properly indicate the requirements that he has completed and that the Scout knows why he did not complete the badge requirements. |
