Forestry [BADGE]

Introduction Your challenge as a summer camp merit badge counselor is to see that the Scouts who attend your session have the best opportunity to learn about forestry. It is important that they have a positive experience. This lesson plan is designed to help you plan a logical, high-quality program. Sign off on the requirements as the Scouts complete them.
Resources Be sure to utilize all the resources available to you. State and federal agencies or other organizations can provide you with a variety of materials and displays and can make presentations at your camp. Make sure you don’t wait until the last minute to ask for help. These agencies need time to arrange for personnel and materials.

DAY ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION

1 Greet Scouts A. Examine all merit badge cards for the Scoutmaster's signature. Make a roster of the Scouts.
Review B. Review requirement 1 with Scouts. Rather than removing leaves and limbs from trees and shrubs, have Scouts identify them in the wild. They can describe to you the information requested in parts a-d.
Information C. Where the requirements suggest a visit to a forested area or logging operation, try to secure people to visit your camp and describe the items related to requirement 6.
Plan D. Discuss requirement 7a and discuss what type of project can be done in your camp. Permit the Scouts to select one of the projects to perform.

2 Hike A. Take a hike and identify the trees and shrubs.
Observe B. Locate several stumps and logs for requirement 2b.
Hike/Discuss C. During the hike, ask the Scouts to discuss the contributions forests make to our lifestyle (requirements 3a and 3b).

3 Project A. Begin work on a project for requirement 7a.
Discuss B. While working on the project, discuss items in requirement 6a.

4 Work A. Continue work on the project.
Note B. This is the time to make sure all the Scouts are proceeding on schedule. If it looks like anyone is having a problem in completing the merit badge, the Scoutmaster should be notified.

5 Review A. Wrap up all the requirements. Prepare the merit badge cards for the proper signatures. If any Scout does not complete all the requirements, make sure that his records properly indicate the requirements that he has completed and that the Scout knows why he did not complete the badge requirements.
B. Submit necessary records to the camp program director.
